Wow, what a week and start to jewellery bench life for Skye. 2 pieces made, the first being a pair of heart shaped amethysts set on chain. Baptism by fire you might say, hearts are one of the most difficult shapes to make with wire - she had to make 4 of them for the earring set. The tasks she's completing give her the fundamental bench skills, and I'm pretty impressed that as a first year apprentice in her FIRST WEEK, she's accomplished these pieces. Her soldering ability on fine silver wire - actually so much harder that soldering gold - grew exponentially. The second piece is a spinner ring, which Skye assisted Freya to complete - Freya receiving a gift voucher for the ring and an opportunity to be a part of the design and making process. Skye and I connected a year ago through a local entrepreneur program I was asked to mentor her with. I knew she was the apprentice I had been manifesting, and here we are, making it happen! Today this man deserves the biggest shoutout - it's Pete, who was my TAFE trainer and now runs the most amazing world wide online jewellery training program. Today is his birthday and 10 years since he started @jewellerytrainingsolutions 🎉🎉🎉 Our industry, particularly in Australia, does not value fine handmade jewellery skills like they used to. Good apprenticeships, let alone bad ones, are so hard to find. This is the reason why I moved to South West WA 19 years ago, I applied for a few in Perth, but being a mature age female applicant, was not hired. I got my shot down south, and am so thankful to Pete for his generosity in skill sharing, time to listen about life in general, his hilarious ability to lighten the mood and connect with all the age groups he was entrusted to train. Anyone who trained under him got the best TAFE training they could ask for, he no longer teaches there, so it's not the same. Knowing how Pete teaches and accessing his training program for my soon to start apprentice will give her a solid and in depth start in the trade, along side my awesomeness of course 🤣 So cheers to you Pete, your legacy and influence in the Australian trade and now worldwide is so appreciated in a industry where automation, cheap imports, outsourcing for cheap labour and a lack of desire from some jewellery businesses to teach lasting fine jewellery skills seems to be the way it's going. One very rosy 50th gift In keeping with Natalie's birthday week theme, rose gold, we created this 18ct rose gold and platinum ring, using family stones. Initially we had chosen pink tourmaline for the shoulders, with the dusty colour, but a pivot to diamonds instead was definitely a good call. We've been a bit secret squirrel, today was the first create your own wedding ring workshop for me in the studio, and what a brilliant workshop it was! I can't give away any details of my clients creations, but they absolutely nailed the skills taught, and both had a huge part of making each other's rings. It was very special to see them both so involved in being a part of their journey together. These two chose for me to source and provide the gold for them, and an option for any couple wanting to do their own workshop together (or one half wanting to make a surprise ring for their loved one) is to use existing gold as well. With any of the private workshop experiences, a delicious platter box from @come.graze.southwest and local sparkling is included (for later, no drinking and filing allowed 😁) - as you can see, the food was spectacular and such a nice way to graze as we progressed through the hands on steps for my first time jewellery makers.
